Activity and functional interaction of alternative oxidase and uncoupling protein in mitochondria from tomato fruit BJMBR
Sluse,F.E.; Jarmuszkiewicz,W..
Cyanide-resistant alternative oxidase (AOX) is not limited to plant mitochondria and is widespread among several types of protists. The uncoupling protein (UCP) is much more widespread than previously believed, not only in tissues of higher animals but also in plants and in an amoeboid protozoan. The redox energy-dissipating pathway (AOX) and the proton electrochemical gradient energy-dissipating pathway (UCP) lead to the same final effect, i.e., a decrease in ATP synthesis and an increase in heat production. Studies with green tomato fruit mitochondria show that both proteins are present simultaneously in the membrane. This raises the question of a specific physiological role for each energy-dissipating system and of a possible functional connection...

Alternative mitochondrial functions in cell physiopathology: beyond ATP production BJMBR
Kowaltowski,A.J..
It is well known that mitochondria are the main site for ATP generation within most tissues. However, mitochondria also participate in a surprising number of alternative activities, including intracellular Ca2+ regulation, thermogenesis and the control of apoptosis. In addition, mitochondria are the main cellular generators of reactive oxygen species, and may trigger necrotic cell death under conditions of oxidative stress. This review concentrates on these alternative mitochondrial functions, and their role in cell physiopathology.

Alternative oxidase in the branched mitochondrial respiratory network: an overview on structure, function, regulation, and role BJMBR
Sluse,F.E.; Jarmuszkiewicz,W..
Plants and some other organisms including protists possess a complex branched respiratory network in their mitochondria. Some pathways of this network are not energy-conserving and allow sites of energy conservation to be bypassed, leading to a decrease of the energy yield in the cells. It is a challenge to understand the regulation of the partitioning of electrons between the various energy-dissipating and -conserving pathways. This review is focused on the oxidase side of the respiratory chain that presents a cyanide-resistant energy-dissipating alternative oxidase (AOX) besides the cytochrome pathway. The known structural properties of AOX are described including transmembrane topology, dimerization, and active sites. Regulation of the alternative...

Influence of light regimes on respiration, activity of alternative respiratory pathway and carbohydrates content in mature leaves of Ajuga reptans L. Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
PYSTINA,NATALIA V.; DANILOV,ROMAN A..
Influence of different light regimes (plants grown in shade and in the sun) on respiration, activity of alternative respiratory pathway and carbohydrates content in mature leaves of Ajuga reptans L. was investigated. All experiments were carried out under natural conditions. Sun plants had higher respiration, activity of the alternative pathway and carbohydrates content compared to the shade plants. Additional experiments were performed in order to study effects of darkening as well as evolution of respiration and carbohydrates concentrations in leaves of A. reptans during the day. Darkening led to a decline in total respiration in all types of plants investigated. Activity of the alternative pathway remained unchanged by 20 % in the leaves of the shade...

Temperature-dependent alterations of respiration in leaves of two selected vascular plant species: the role of the alternative oxidase pathway Bragantia
Pystina,Natalia V.; Danilov,Roman A..
Effects of higher temperatures on respiration and activity of alternative oxidase (AOX) were studied in mature leaves of Ajuga reptans L. and Rhodiola rosea L. Total respiration in both A. reptans and R. rosea increased exponentially with the increasing temperature of 10 °C to 35 °C. Respiration in the presence of benzhydroxamic acid (BHAM) also increased exponentially in accordance with the increasing temperature in the leaves of both A. reptans and R. rosea. Relative activity of the alternative pathway decreased significantly in the leaves of A. reptans with increasing temperatures. However, an increase in the relative activity of the alternative pathway was detected in the leaves of R. rosea. Thermoresistance of the alternative respiratory pathway was...
